Manly at-tire: Magnolia, New Jersey's Tire Store Muffler Man

Muffler Men and New Jersey go together like Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. A nice diversion off the New Jersey Turnpike in the southern part of the state is Royal Tire and Auto's magnificent specimen of muffler manhood. Nattily fitted in black shirt, faded red pants and rubber tire bracelet, this brute looks right at home on this busy Garden State thoroughfare. He also appears to be sporting pink lipstick, but, hey, we're not here to judge. You're spinning your wheels if you think you'll top this muffler man: he's got charm to spare, performs well under pressure, will belt it out and ply his trade, and won't leave you feeling deflated. I skid you not. (rim shot)

I can't top him...but I can match him. His brother holds vigil over Cowtown Flea Market in Woodstown, NJ. Of course, he's dressed like a cowboy. I've always been confused by the weird way he holds his hands--did he have a pitchfork in them at one time? The hub and I think he has just choked his wife, and is looking at his hands like "I can't believe this has happened to me again."

A third brother is on Route 40 near Havre de Grace. He is in front of a car maintenance place...but he is dressed in spiffy camouflage.

I thought they were just twins--it is so exciting to see that there were triplets in the family!!!

Oh I'm pretty sure there's an entire Muffler Man family strewn across the US! The one in Havre de Grace MD was subject of one of my very first posts on Retro Roadmap:

Not to take the fun out of discovery, but many of the extended family are represented on Roadside America's Muffler Man Web Page

http://www.roadsideamerica.com/muffler/

At least you know you can plan a trip around 'em that way!

Historic: Thanks for the tips... What a rich bounty! We tried to find the Nitro Girl Uniroyal Gal in nearby Blackwood, NJ, but, alas, got lost and gave up. Maybe next time.

Betty: That Havre de Grace specimen is a real beaut. I love the irony of a camouflaged muffler man! And, yes, we've used roadsideamerica often. They're the best!
