Eccentric Rhodeside: Wet and Wild in Rhode Island

Our backyard after the water receded.

Our neighbor's picnic table.

It's not often that little Rhode Island leads the national TV news broadcasts but we managed to do just that with the insanely heavy rains and floods this week. Here's a little multi-media action that hits close to home for us...literally. The street in front of our house had foot-deep rapids yesterday and about three-quarters of our backyard was submerged under a couple of feet of water. The best gage of the depth is my neighbor's picnic table, the seats of which were almost under water. By this morning most of the water had receded and my neighbor's picnic table was usable again, thank goodness. Big chunks of the neighborhood pavement have washed away, though, leaving us here to wade through the swamps. Luckily, though, this all just a hassle and everybody here seems okay.

  1. I saw on the online news that Little Rhody was submerged and 95 was closed! Glad to hear you guys are OK, hoping RI diners and such are holding up, and just to be on the safe side' we'll head up the middle of CT on our way to Boston on Friday!

  2. Yes, Betty, you should definitely avoid 95 for the near future. Don't know about the diners but the main commercial drag in poor Warwick is quite damp...waves lapping up against Macys, submerged cars at Old Navy and Bed, Bath and Beyond really is Beyond. Have a safe trip!

  3. This flooding looks like Florida when the Suwannee rises. Glad it receded.

  4. Thanks, Suzanna. They don't call Rhode Islanders "swamp Yankees" for nothing!

  5. Hope that the water stayed out of your basement, too!

  6. Ahhh, I hope that any damage was minimal. I hate flooding . . . I lost my entire apartment and everything in it during a rare winter flood in 1996. It was just awful@

  7. Thanks, Wendy. We had an inch or two of water in our basement for a few days which was annoying but nothing got damaged, luckily, and now we're sitting pretty because Sherry's brother installed a sump pump for us. Hooray!
