Roadtrip journal: Sidney, Nebraska. Cabela's: who says you can't have a stuffed wolverine in a clothing store?

More midwestern hospitality

Cabela's

September 2006
Final destination: Sterling, Colorado

Just up the road from Carhenge is a fine example of tacky roadside whimsy: a "rest area" consisting of a toilet and easy chair on bales of hay. Good photo op. Our next destination is the world headquarters of Cabela's in Sidney, Nebraska. Cabela's is the retail store for the outdoorsman's outdoorsman. Personally, I prefer the great indoors, but I love walking around giant stores like this which scream "proud to be an American". This place is so big they even have their own water tower. A collection of stuffed animals that rival the world's best natural history museums is front and center: badgers, wolverines, bears, mountain goats... all shot and stuffed, one assumes, with fine Cabela's products. They also have lots of great clothes at great prices, especially if you're partial to plaid flannel as we are. Happy and exhausted with our retail/museum outing we head down the road a couple more hours across the Colorado border to our final destination: the Sterling, Colorado Super8. We're bushed and ready to settle in with "Jaws2" on the Magnavox and a Stouffer's frozen dinner.
